With the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 — when negotiations have been almost exclusively carried out in online settings — there is a growing need for research which addresses this new norm. This dissertation explores how linguistic cues can corroborate or challenge the established measures in negotiation and conflict management research. The overarching objective is to study the interdependence of language and culture in the presence of technology within the domain of international negotiations and conflict resolution. The first essay of the dissertation addresses the anomalies regarding the use of the two major negotiation strategies identified by prior research – questions and answers (Q&A) and substantiation and offers (S&O) – and their effectiveness across cultures. I triangulate between cognitive methods utilized in negotiations research (mental model convergence, fixed-pie bias), linguistic cues (words with positive and negative connotations), and language style matching (LSM), a novel analysis in international buyer-seller negotiations. Based on an online negotiation simulation between representatives of a high-context (Hong Kong Chinese) and low-context (U.S.) communication culture (total sample size is 300) and subsequent linguistic analysis of the transcripts, the essay questions the notion of normative strategy; shows the conditions when the strategies have an integrative versus distributive character; identifies cognitive mechanisms which explain why S&O might be more beneficial than Q&A in a high-context communication culture; and clarifies in which cultural contexts the index of language style matching reflects a deeper, cognitive simmilarity and in which an automatic process. The second essay is a systematic literature review of studies about language in international conflict management research. The essay emphasizes a positive potential of a conflict and suggests how it can be achieved linguistically in an intercultural environment. It shows how language can give a dynamic process to conflict management. Unlike the static view of conflict, the proposed theoretical framework underscores the importance of poly-contextual behavior, i.e., how the behavior changes across contexts. By focusing on the multilingualism, the essay further disentangles language and culture, which are often mixed together. The essay suggests short term and long term strategies for a dynamic conflict de-escalation in the domain of international business

Along with the sociocultural, natural and technogenic life environments in the post-industrial society, the information environment, embodied by the media and the global Internet, is becoming the leading one. In the information environment, individual activity is transferred to the Internet. It includes professional activities mediated by distance technologies, social networking, Internet communities, personal sites, blogs, twitters, collections of scientific, educational, literary and artistic publications, news, movies, concerts, meetings, etc. In this context, the dual social role of the teacher as a provider and, at the same time, consumer of educational services is highlighted. The development of general and professional competencies (especially socio-communicative) affects the success of a teacher in the field of socialization, education and upbringing of young people in the society based on innovations and high technologies. The education system demands a teacher who is able to implement innovative changes in the educational process, requires fundamentally new technological support for innovations and involves the development of the relevant norms of innovative behavior and description of the models, types and methods of disseminating innovative pedagogical experience. Such a teacher meets the requirements of the Russian national project “Our New School” and should be one of the most important resources for modernizing the education system as a whole and, in particular, in terms of continuing professional development. High-quality performance of professional labor functions (training, educating, upbringing) implies the possession of competencies in the analysis, exchange and dissemination of innovative pedagogical technologies. Professional development of a teacher is impossible without the need to transmit the positive experience to wide pedagogical communities

Abstract: A search for the doubly charmed baryon Ωcc+ with the decay mode Ωcc+ → Ξc+K−π+ is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1. No significant signal is observed within the invariant mass range of 3.6 to 4.0GeV/c2. Upper limits are set on the ratio R of the production cross-section times the total branching fraction of the Ωcc+ → Ξc+K−π+ decay with respect to the Ξcc++→Λc+K−π+π+ decay. Upper limits at 95% credibility level for R in the range 0.005 to 0.11 are obtained for different hypotheses on the Ωcc+ mass and lifetime in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and transverse momentum range from 4 to 15 GeV/c

Linguistic ways of expressing emotions in French business discourse (based on business media texts)

    No full text
Being an integral part of the life of society, business discourse is of particular interest to study from the standpoint of the emotional behavior of its participants. The spheres in which this type of communication is used are different. The manifestation and expression of emotions in business discourse is the speaker’s intention to influence the interlocutor in the right direction, to cause a certain emotional reaction from his side. This paper examines the emotional component of French business discourse as one of the foundations of its coherence. An attempt is made to comprehensively analyze business discourse from the point of view of the verbal expression of emotions and determine their role in the implementation of pragmatic attitudes characteristic of this type of discourse. At the same time, given the rapid, constant development of the journalistic style in the French language, the disclosure of this aspect is of undoubted interest from the point of view of enriching information about the French media and modern French in general

New time challenges cause new contradictions that are peculiar for educational environment in Russia and they require instant solutions. We have identified the contradictions which defined our target to determine the techniques and methods of distance education for students of pedagogical specializations based on practice-oriented approach, implementation of media educational technologies into the preparation of university students aimed at the development of knowledge, competencies and skills in distance learning in different types of educational institutions. Media educational technologies are conditioned by general pedagogical and didactic principles and the choice of pedagogical methods directly depends on the content of educational discipline, conditions of its implementation and other factors. Media educational technologies used for the completion of social-pedagogical disciplines for university students consist of creative and game tasks. Using them it is essential to consider special features of various media and the target of the lesson. Practice is another relevant purpose in the process of distance learning. We believe that this problem will be dominating in the nearest future as practice in distance learning is focused on by higher education institutions. In this article some techniques and types of this practical training are presented being shaped by the format of distance learning. During various practices the students of pedagogical specializations will be able not only to prepare for their future work but also to assist subject teachers, social pedagogues in schools and to make considerable contributions in this work

    No full text
Purpose—The aims of the current study were as follows: (1) to develop a framework of the job competence of employees to examine the recruitment of employees in their specialized fields, and (2) to answer the question of whether the development of that framework of the job competence of employees in attracting and employing people or their appointment and promotion was effective in achieving the goals of the organization. Design/methodology—Researchers examined the work environment of a branch of the Welfare Organization of Iran and the most important duties and responsibilities of the employees of the specialized spheres of the organization. Afterward, researchers listed the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the employees. Then, the authors asked 70 experts working in this organization to express their views on the importance of each of these items and the status of each of the proposed items in terms of their relevance, clarity, simplicity, and ambiguity. Accordingly, the competencies were categorized and titled. The identified competencies were classified into four main groups: needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The authors used the pairwise comparison method and the hierarchical analysis process approach to weighting. Findings—The authors set and presented critical competencies related to each specialized field of healthcare, social, educational, and cultural affairs in separate frameworks. The research results allowed theoretical and practical approaches to modeling to consider transversal and disciplinary competencies for a social, economic, or environmental commitment based on the sustainability concept. Value—Developing the employee competency frameworks of the health service is essential for sustainable development. The validated employee competency frameworks in the Welfare Organization can be applied in other provinces of Iran and other sectors of the healthcare system
